Notes on The Colonial Period/The Age of Faith

The Colonial Period isn't really the first American literature, because Native Americans had oral tradition. Genres of Colonial Period literature: journels, sermons, narratives, religious poetry, and histories. Puritans -Law from Bible -Had a strong work ethic/hard working -Persecuted for their faith -Were literalists (if Bible says it, they do it) Pilgrims Puritans that came to New England in 1620, first to come over What we identify as American today comes from the religion, beliefs, and ethics of the Puritans Puritan Literature -Always wrote about religion -Wrote abot forms of revelation, and moments when the spiritual world and the physical world converge or diverge -"The Puritans read their lives like a literary critic reads a book" -Style = very plain and literal, no puns or fancy wording ("means what it says and says what it means") -Plain style-- lacks symbolism, metaphors, cliches, puns, hidden messages, etc. Histories vs Journels Factual/objective Opinionated/subjective After things happen As things happen
